The sweater situation that got out of hand. Kids back in school, routines resetting, and every closet in the house suddenly up for review.
This year, that annual purge can do something bigger than clear space. It can put real money into the hands of local schools and nonprofits — and fund job training for neighbors across Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo counties at the same time.
Welcome to Fall for Good, Goodwill Central Coast’s community donation drive — the second major drive of the year, timed for the season when everyone is already deciding what to keep and what to let go.
How it works (spoiler: Goodwill does the heavy lifting)
Hosting a donation drive with Goodwill Central Coast is genuinely simple. Your school, club, business, civic group or nonprofit picks a date and rallies your people. Goodwill provides a truck to collect the goods and a team member to help sort the donations. Your organization earns money based on what comes in — and drives like these can net an organization thousands of dollars.
That’s it. No garage sale to run, no pricing stickers, no leftover boxes haunting the multipurpose room. Just a community coming together, a truck filling up, and a check that supports your programs.

Where your donations actually go
Here’s the part that makes a Goodwill drive different from any other fundraiser: the impact doesn’t stop with your organization’s check.
Every item collected is sold in Goodwill Central Coast’s local stores, and that revenue funds job training, career services and employment programs for neighbors working to overcome barriers to employment. In 2024 alone, GCC served more than 23,000 individuals across the Central Coast — people rebuilding after hardship, entering the workforce for the first time, or working toward stability and independence.
In a typical year, the community entrusts Goodwill Central Coast with more than 630,000 donations — over 25 million pounds of clothing and household items — and more than 17 million pounds of that is diverted from local landfills. Your outgrown jackets and extra dishes become someone’s interview outfit, someone’s fresh start, someone’s first paycheck.

The back-to-school closet refresh, upgraded
Even if you’re not hosting a drive, September is the perfect month to donate. New season, new wardrobe? The clothes your family is replacing can fund a fresh start for someone else. Drive up to any Goodwill donation center across the tri-county area, pop the trunk, and the team will do the rest — tax receipt in your hand before you leave. Large items? Free home pickup may be available; email donorservices@ccgoodwill.org with photos, your address and phone number.
