How we help keep our landfills from being ‘landfulls’

Goodwill Central Coast – Help keep our landfills from being 'landfulls'

Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day, a time to honor a fruitful yet fragile planet that provides us with everything to sustain life.

People everywhere will celebrate by planting trees, picking up litter, riding a bike to work or any number of small things that, when combined, have a powerful effect

As Voltaire once said: “No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible,” yet where would the avalanche be without each snowflake?

For example, did you know that every time you shop at or donate to Goodwill Central Coast you are doing a little bit to help save our Earth? Goodwill is an entrepreneurial leader, environmental pioneer and social innovator of the “reduce, reuse, repurpose” practice.

Goodwill Central Coast shoppers can enjoy guilt-free retail therapy, knowing every purchase supports job training programs and promotes reuse, keeping useful items out of our landfills and reducing the need for scarce natural resources.

In a typical year, Goodwill as a whole helps prevent more than 200 million pounds of used items out of our landfills. We have become a disposable society, and the trash that we kick to the curb every week can take decades or even centuries to break down at a landfill, depositing chemicals into the soil as it does.

Instead of trashing the gently used items you no longer want, donate them to Goodwill. Most of those donations will find a new home with someone else — and what doesn’t sell is efficiently recycled.

And remember, shopping at your local Goodwill not only helps you BE green but also SAVE green at the same time. Saving money has never been so easy — and helping save the world has never been so fun!
