Way back in 1439, German craftsman and inventor Johannes Gutenberg developed a method of printing from movable type. It became known as the printing press.
The ability to print anything quickly eventually sparked a revolution, where knowledge and ideas spread quickly around the world.
At first, printers distributed only religious texts and literature, starting with the inventor’s own Gutenberg Bible. Literacy rates were still very low in the 1490s, so locals would gather at the pub to hear a paid reader captivate the crowd.
Due to a minuscule market for books, Gutenberg died penniless, his presses impounded by his creditors. Eventually, more and more people learned to read, and a wide variety of books were published as an eager public waited in great anticipation.
Because knowledge is power, literacy helped shape the modern world. Today, science knows that there are many benefits to reading beyond pure enjoyment. Picking up a book:
- improves brain connectivity.
- increases your vocabulary and comprehension.
- empowers you to empathize with other people.
- aids in sleep readiness.
- reduces stress.
- lowers blood pressure and heart rate.
- fights depression symptoms.
- prevents cognitive decline as you age.
At Goodwill Central Coast, we celebrate books and literacy as part of our mission to help empower individuals to improve their lives.
So we cannot let National Book Month go by without reminding you that your local Goodwill shelves are brimming with colorful stories waiting to be discovered! We accept almost every book in every condition, so there’s no telling what you’ll find. We’re proud to make reading and learning more accessible to the community with prices as low as a buck a book.
Started in 2003, National Book Month is held each October, the month-long celebration focusing on the importance of reading, writing, and literature.
National Book Month is also a time to honor the country’s best books and authors. In mid-October, the National Book Awards announces the year’s 15 finalists.
Whether or not you’re a bibliophile, Goodwill Central Coast has just the book for you. With a wide and ever-growing selection, the book section of your local store is not only an excellent place to browse but also if you need to touch up your home decor.
Nothing enlivens a room quite like bookshelves lined with stories and ideas from the past. Don’t forget to peek under worn or torn dust jackets, where often the most beautiful covers hide beneath. Sure, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but at Goodwill’s prices, a bit of a cosmetic interest in a lesser-known tale isn’t such a bad thing.
And showing off those colorful, romantic books sends a powerful message. Who knows, someone at some time in the future, may stand in front of those spines and pull one from its place. And an adventure will begin.
