Make your Halloween costume creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky with Addams Family inspiration

It’s no coincidence that the wickedly funny “Addams Family 2” movie release falls on the first day of October, given that month’s spooky tendencies.

The animated sequel features the antics and adventures of a fictional family created by American cartoonist Charles Addams. We all remember the song, right?

They’re creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky—they’re all together ooky—the Addams Family!

The Addamses are a satirical inversion of the ideal 20th-century American family: an odd, wealthy, aristocratic clan that delights in the macabre, with members seemingly unaware or unconcerned that other people find them bizarre or frightening.

The family is also the perfect inspiration for Halloween, and Goodwill Central Coast stores provide the shopping grounds to put together ideal costumes.

What isn’t frightening is how all of those October purchases help fuel our mission to remove obstacles to employment in our communities. Secondly, creating DIY Halloween costumes is better for the environment. Many store-bought, pre-made costumes are made using petrochemical-based plastics and synthetic fibers that you can’t recycle.

From DIY decor to costume inspiration, Goodwill Central Coast stores have everything you need for a unique Halloween. This year, why not create more tricks, treats, and fun with these inspired “Addams Family 2” costume ideas?

Wednesday Addams

Known for her spooky personality and Gothic appearance, the family’s lone daughter is the perfect muse for a Halloween costume.

Here’s what you need to get started:

Materials

  • Long-sleeved black dress
  • White Peter Pan collar shirt
  • Black tights
  • Black shoes

Instructions:

Layer the dress over the shirt, and you have a Wednesday Addams dress! Make braids and give a serious face for the full Wednesday effect!

Pugsley Addams

Pugsley is Gomez and Morticia Addams’s oldest child. He is a preteen boy who is almost always seen wearing a striped T-shirt and shorts.

Materials

  • Solid white, long-sleeve T-shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Black electrical tape

Instructions:

Lay the T-shirt on an ironing board or a flat surface and apply horizontal stripes of electrical tape to mimic the character’s signature shirt. It’s easy to apply, and the tape comes right off when you take off the shirt after Halloween.

Cousin Itt

This popular character is diminutive, his visible form composed entirely of floor-length blonde hair, often topped with a bowler hat and accented with round sunglasses.

Materials

  • 3 pairs of brown pajama pants
  • 1 black hoodie
  • Safety pins
  • Black bowler-type hat
  • Sunglasses

Instructions:

Buy one pair of brown pajama pants in your child’s size. The other two pairs should be in the largest size possible. Cut the large pants into strips — cut along all the seams. You should have eight long strips. Pin the strips of brown fabric to the hoodie. Then cut each strip in half again, but not to the top — stop a few inches from the top so they stay pinned to the hoodie. Then top with the hat, put on sunglasses, and you’re ready! Tell your child to make sure there’s a gap in the strips when walking around so they don’t trip.
