Make your Halloween costume creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky with Addams Family inspiration

It’s no coincidence that the wickedly funny “Addams Family 2” movie release falls on the first day of October, given that month’s spooky tendencies.

The animated sequel features the antics and adventures of a fictional family created by American cartoonist Charles Addams. We all remember the song, right?

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, The Addams Family!

The Addamses are a satirical inversion of the ideal 20th-century American family: an odd wealthy aristocratic clan that delights in the macabre with members seemingly unaware or unconcerned that other people find them bizarre or frightening.

The family is also the perfect inspiration for Halloween, and Goodwill Central Coast stores provide the shopping grounds to put together the perfect costumes.

What isn’t frightening is how all of those October purchases help fuel our mission to remove obstacles to employment in our communities. Secondly, creating DIY Halloween costumes is better for the environment. Many store-bought, pre-made costumes are created using petro-chemical-based plastics and synthetic fibers that you can’t recycle.

From DIY decor to costume inspiration, Goodwill Central Coast stores have everything you need for a unique Halloween. This year, why not create more tricks, more treats, and more fun this season, with these inspired “Addams Family 2” costume ideas?

Wednesday Addams

Known for her spooky personality and Gothic appearance, the family’s lone daughter is the perfect muse for a Halloween costume.

Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Long sleeve black dress
  • White Peter Pan collar shirt
  • Black tights
  • Black shoes

Layer the dress over the shirt and you have a Wednesday Addams dress! Make braids and give a serious face for the full Wednesday effect!

Pugsley Addams

Pugsley is the oldest child of Gomez and Morticia Addams. He is a pre-teen boy who is almost always seen wearing a striped T-shirt and shorts.

  • Solid white, long-sleeve T-shirt
  • Black shorts
  • Black electrical tape

Lay the T-shirt on an iron board or a flat surface and apply horizontal stripes of electrical tape to mimic the character’s signature shirt. It’s easy to apply and the tape comes right off to use the shirt after Halloween.

Cousin Itt

This popular character is a diminutive being, his visible form composed entirely of floor-length blonde hair, often topped with a bowler hat and accented with round sunglasses.

  • 3 pairs of brown pajama pants
  • 1 black hoodie
  • Safety pins
  • Black bowler-type hat
  • Sunglasses

Buy 1 pair of brown pajama pants in your child’s size to wear. The other 2  pairs should be in the largest size possible. Cut the large pants into strips — basically cut along all the seams. You should have 8 long strips. Pin the strips of brown fabric to the hood of the hoodie. Then cut each strip in half again, but not all the way to the top — stop a few inches from the top so they stay pinned to the hoodie. Then top with the hat put on sunglasses and you’re ready! Tell your child to make sure there’s a gap in the strips when walking around so they don’t trip.

Remember, Goodwill is a destination for Halloween costumes and everyday apparel, but it stands for something bigger. We equip people with the right skills and support so they can achieve sustainably better futures through employment. We provide employment placement, job training, credentials, digital skills, and other support services so that people reach their full potential through learning and the power of work.

Nothing scary about that!
