Together, we thrive: How donating and thrifting with Goodwill builds stronger communities and a healthier planet

In every closet, garage, or storage bin, there’s something waiting to be more than just “stuff.” A pair of shoes that could help someone land a job interview. A gently used jacket that keeps a child warm on their walk to school. A kitchen set that transforms a new apartment into a home. At Goodwill Central Coast, we believe these everyday items have extraordinary power — to change lives, strengthen communities, and protect our environment.

When you donate, shop, or thrift with us, you’re doing more than decluttering or saving money. You’re joining a movement that gives people the tools they need to build better lives. And when we do it together — as families, neighbors, or whole communities — the impact multiplies.

Our mission: Removing barriers, rebuilding lives

At the heart of Goodwill Central Coast’s mission is one simple, powerful goal — to remove the obstacles that stand between people and meaningful employment.

Whether someone is overcoming homelessness, reentering the workforce, facing a disability, or trying to find their first job, we meet them where they are — and help them get where they want to go. Our programs include:

  • Supportive services for those facing employment barriers
  • Job training and placement services
  • Education and career readiness
  • Digital literacy
  • Financial coaching through our Opportunity Platform

Last year our mission helped serve more than 23,000 people in search of opportunity, support and a second chance — a 34 percent increase from the previous year.

Thrift with purpose

Shopping secondhand isn’t just smart — it’s impactful. Every item you buy from Goodwill Central Coast helps fund local programs that lift people out of poverty and give them the dignity of work. It also gives gently used goods a second life, reducing waste and keeping thousands of pounds of usable materials out of landfills each year.

The environmental upside of thrifting is real:

  • Reduces textile waste (more than 85 percent of discarded clothes in the U.S. end up in landfills)
  • Lowers demand for new manufacturing, saving water and energy
  • Cuts down on packaging waste from fast fashion and big-box retail

So when you choose to thrift, you’re not just finding unique treasures — you’re part of a sustainable solution.

Yes, it takes a village

Changing the way we think about secondhand starts at home — and grows through community. Here’s how to make it a shared mission:

  • Make donating a family ritual: Get the kids involved! Have them pick out toys or clothes they no longer use and explain how these items can help other children. Turn seasonal clean-outs into teachable moments.
  • Host a neighborhood donation drive: Rally your block or local school to collect gently used clothing, books, or home goods for donation. Set a date, pick a Goodwill Central Coast drop-off location, and turn it into a community event.
  • Go thrifting together: Make a family challenge out of back-to-school shopping or holiday decorating—all through secondhand finds. Teach teens the joy of vintage fashion and the value of reuse.
  • Tell the story: When you post a great thrift find or donation haul, include a note about how it supports job seekers in your own community. You never know who you might inspire.

A culture shift that starts with us

Secondhand shopping isn’t just a budget-friendly alternative — it’s a lifestyle choice that values sustainability, community, and compassion. It’s about what we can do together when we stop seeing used as “less than,” and start seeing it as “more than” — more meaningful, more impactful, and more hopeful.

At Goodwill Central Coast, we’ve seen firsthand how a single donated item can turn into someone’s second chance. That’s the real power of thrift.
