In today’s world, true community connection goes beyond physical proximity — it requires digital inclusion. Without digital skills and access to the internet, many individuals are left out of essential aspects of modern life.
A thriving community depends on its members being able to communicate, access information, and participate in economic and civic life. But when some individuals lack the knowledge or tools to navigate the digital landscape, they become isolated, unable to fully engage in conversations, services, and opportunities that shape the collective well-being of their community.
Without digital literacy, people struggle to participate in school activities, manage their finances, or even stay in touch with family and friends. In this way, the digital divide isn’t just about technology — it’s about human connection.
Ensuring that every community member has the skills and resources to be part of the digital world has become part of our widening mission at Goodwill Central Coast. Your donations and purchases not only support our employment initiatives, but other more specific needs of the community. For example, our Digital Literacy program empowers individuals with the confidence and skills needed to thrive in a fast-growing, tech-heavy world.
Our Digital Literacy program provides hands-on training, mentorship, and career-focused education in:
- Resume building and online job applications
- Navigating email and professional communication tools
- Microsoft Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more)
- Video conferencing platforms like Zoom and Teams
- Safe online browsing and cybersecurity awareness
Breaking barriers to technology access
Many participants in the program come from the Monterey Expanded Subsidized Employment Program, which connects job seekers with employment opportunities. However, one of the biggest challenges they face is the digital gap—a lack of access to technology and the knowledge to use it effectively.
“Our clients come from all backgrounds and ages,” said Adrian Licea, GCC Mission Services Director. “But they all share a common challenge: they need digital skills to return to the workforce and provide for their families.”
Through one-on-one training, workshops, and certification programs, GCC ensures no one is left behind in today’s digital age. Participants can even earn industry-recognized certifications through CertiPort and Northstar, making them more competitive in the job market.
The wider impact of digital literacy
The benefits of our program extend far beyond the workplace. Participants also learn how to:
- Access online healthcare and telemedicine services
- Navigate educational resources for themselves or their children
- Engage with social services and financial management tools
- Stay connected with family and friends through social media and email
As we begin to recognize the diverse needs of the community, GCC is working to expand our program offerings to better serve Spanish-speaking participants.
“We are finding ways to provide classes in Spanish, since the need is there,” Licea said. “We’re translating content and ensuring staff members are available to assist with language barriers.”
By making digital education accessible to all, GCC ensures that everyone — regardless of background or language — has the opportunity to succeed.
A brighter future starts here
Digital Literacy is more than just a training initiative — it’s a bridge to a brighter future. With each participant who learns how to send an email, create a resume, or navigate a virtual job interview, Goodwill Central Coast is breaking down barriers and building a stronger, more connected community.
For those who have ever felt left behind in the digital age, GCC is here to help. Whether you’re re-entering the workforce, looking to improve your job prospects, or simply want to gain confidence in using technology, the Digital Literacy program offers the tools and support to help you succeed.
